A recent transplant from the California coast to Pamlico County, Sage Russell is excited to tell your stories and get to know the community
My father, like many fathers before him, instilled in me a variety of life lessons. From when I was a young kid, asking big questions about life and how things worked, he began every answer with: “It’s complicated.”
He taught me that things are not often black and white, and that typically the truth lies somewhere in the gray. As I grew older and began college, he hit me with another phrase that really stuck: “Follow your curiosity.”

Subconsciously, this is something I’ve always done. From picking up boxing during my freshman year of high school after watching “Southpaw,” to joining the student newspaper, the GW Hatchet, I’ve continued to build upon my interests. This is what brought me to Pamlico County.
Having grown up in the town of Half Moon Bay, just outside San Francisco, I found a sense of similarity that drew me here.
Half Moon Bay’s school system is comprised of three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, so by the time one graduates, we are all pretty close. Both towns have a strong relationship with their waterfronts, and each community is held together by generations of residents.

The strength of community is abundantly clear in Pamlico County. I saw it firsthand while attending the last walk-through of Pamlico County High School. And I felt it at the laundromat when given a machine with extra time, or when hearing about someone’s plans to visit a new grandchild while I set up my gym membership.
Now, as a fellow with Down in the County, I see it as my mission to be a voice for all who call Pamlico County home. I aim to cover the events, news and stories that impact or make up life here on the eastern coast of North Carolina.
This can take many forms. In addition to the stories I write, I plan to document daily life through photography

Lastly, since I plan to learn about you, I wanted to share a few facts about me:
My favorite food is French toast, which is the greatest breakfast food (not up for debate).
I’ve been boxing since I was 15 and I love all things related to the sport.
My most recent photography project documented the niche, historic sport of whaleboat racing, which takes place across the San Francisco Bay.
I began photography on a film twin-lens reflex camera, the same one my grandma used in high school in the 1950s.
Lastly, I look forward to growing with the Pamlico community, learning about what makes this county unique and building connections with you, its residents.
