Pamlico Voices
Listening to the county tell its own story.
Every community carries stories that rarely make it into history books. County Voices is Down County’s effort to preserve the memories, wisdom, and lived experiences of the Black communities of Pamlico County before they are lost to time. Through oral histories, photography, family images, and community archives, we are building a living record of the people who shaped this county. These are stories of work and faith, joy and hardship, family and belonging—told by those who lived them, and preserved for those who come after.
A community oral history project preserving the voices and lived experiences of the Black communities of Pamlico County.

"Oh my god, it was beautiful. Growing up here, in here, beautiful, beautiful. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. ..."
